Do Your Research
I am bad.
Yes I admit, I do bad things..well not really..BUT when I am in a store and wander into the electronics sections, or go to places like Fry's, Radio Shack, Best Buy etc..I tend to turn my radar on.
My radar is designed to detect BS and I was in a big electronics store a few days ago when I walked by the software department and some sales rep was trying to sell some odd AV program to a customer.
I was buying one too for a client and when I saw what this guy was trying to sell this person I HAD to say something.
I said "I don't wanty to interrupt...BUT..this one is one of the top three (Pointing to a Bit Defender Product) AND, I continued, this one comes with a three PC user license AND it is for two years.
I then explained that I have dealt with all kinds of AV programs and between Bit Defender, Kaspersky, and Norton..those are the top three.
I like Bit Defender for its ease of use and simple GUI interface, but they all do the same thing, are real close in all the reviews and it had THREE user licenses and it was for two years!!
The sales rep tried to throw some BS out to the person and I did counter it quite well.
He then started talking in technospeak to the person and as I saw their eyes glaze over with incomprehension..
I said.."You do what you want, this is just my two cents"
Then I picked up two Bit Defender 2011 packages and walked away.
The person came up to me in the store later and guess what they had in their cart...Bit Defender!!
We talked a few minutes..I explained the install process to them and gave them a card.
I felt good.
The reason I am telling you all this is do your research before you buy.
Call a friend if you are unsure.
If you have no friends, give us a call.
We will point you in the right direction.
Some of the big stores that provide IT Support will ALWAYS try to sell you something you don't need or already have.
They will charge you to come into your home to fix some PC issue you have and then will advise you that "You need a better program, or new hardware...etc"
Not knowing any better, you might succumb to their request and buy that item from them at an inflated price.
They will install it for you and when you wonder why you have two AV programs running, or some other faux pa, remember..we tried to warn you.
We understand that to some..PC's are intimidating and working on them, printers, a network, can be scary to some.
No worries.
We take pride in explaining things to you so you understand what is going on.
We try our best not to switch into the technospeak and really confuse you.
I was honored when I received the following email from a client.
They said
"You have a good and needed service. Plus you are friendly and down to earth!! I can actually understand you and if I don't I feel I can ask"
So the bottom line in all this is...
Do some research before you buy, or before you go to the store.
Their is a wealth of information on the internet.
If your internet is not working... get on the phone and call someone who you can bounce the issue around with.
Don't get suckered by some sales rep trying to make commission.
